Senior Safety Fall Class


Higashi Hongwanji Otani Hall

Sundays 2:00 PM to 3:00PM

The Aikido Ohana will be starting a one-hour Senior Fall Safety Class on April 2. 2017 at 2:00pm at the dojo (Otani Hall). The class is intended to run Sundays, week to week, year to year as interest demands. No gi required, loose fitting comfortable clothing such as sweatpants/T-Shirt/training wear is fine. The course is offered free, as a community service.

According to the Hawaii Fall Prevention Consortium, falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among Hawaii residents age 65 and older, of which 34% are discharged to skilled nursing facilities for additional care and another 11% are moved to a rehabilitation facility.

Although this class is designed with that in mind - to provide seniors with a methodology to receive falls safely - the class is open to all. Please feel free to invite your family and friends that would benefit from this class.

In general, the course goals and objectives are as follows:

Strengthening/Limbering
  • Aikido-related breathing/stretching/warm-up exercises
  • Leg/Core strengthening

Understanding balance/unbalancing

Methodology to receive falls safely

Situational awareness

  • Surroundings
  • Terrain and footwear
  • Distractions
